Request for Donation to Kewanee Newspaper Digital Project

Dear Member,

The Kewanee Historical Society is working with the Henry County Genealogical Society and the Kewanee Public Library to digitize the Kewanee newspapers now on microfilm at  the library.  The digitizing will be done by the same company that has digitized the Galva, Toulon, Bradford, Orion and Geneseo weekly newspapers.  The Kewanee papers will  be accessed, free of charge, through the Kewanee Public Library website.  The other area papers are also available for viewing through their respective library websites.

Digitizing will convert the text on the newspaper microfilm  to searchable text that can be used on your home computer.  About 420 rolls of microfilm are available for digitizing and will still be available for viewing on the library's microfilm reader.

Thanks to donations from  the Historical and Genealogical societies, Kewanee Public Library and several individuals the project is already underway.   Microfilm covering from 1857 to 1922 (79 rolls) has been sent to the Iowa company for scanning, applying the optical character recognition software and placing on the internet.

The first 79 rolls should be available online in a month or so.  To search for a birth, marriage, death, graduation, sporting event, historic event, school, church, industry or whatever just go the Kewanee Public Library website to find the link to the Kewanee newspaper digital project.

The cost for the project is $500 for setting up the website for viewing the digitized newspapers and $95 for each roll of microfilm to be scanned.  We are asking you to consider donating the cost of one roll of film ($95) or more if you care to; but certainly any donation would be happily received.

Donations for the project should be made to Kewanee Public Library District and sent to 102 South Tremont Street, Kewanee, IL 61443.  Digital Newspaper Project should be noted on the check.  The library has 501c3 status with the Internal Revenue Service and would be eligible for matching donations by employers.

Thank you for your consideration.
